Welcome to the Foundation Stage at Abbey Gates.

Our Foundation Stage unit is made up of children in F1 (Nursery) and F2 (Reception). We are very lucky to have a large, shared environment that includes 2 indoor and 2 outdoor areas that are open and accessed throughout the day during "busy time".

In Foundation One, we learn through play – it’s what we do best! We also have short, guided carpet sessions which focus on listening, attention and communication, stories, phonics, maths and discussions about the wider world. Our continuous provision ensures children can access all areas at all times, moving freely between the indoors and outdoors. During ‘busy time’ staff spend time engaging in quality interactions, observations and small guided activities such as art, number, mark making and baking.

In school, we share lots of books, songs and rhymes together - reading is essential for communication, language and literacy development. It is important that children hear stories at home regularly. Reading books at bedtime is an opportunity to spend quality time together and share a love of reading. 

Children can join us in FS1 the term after their third birthday, attending morning sessions or full days. We offer part of the 30 hours childcare for eligible families. We recommend that children attend for a minimum of three sessions per week to help them settle, develop relationships and access a wide range of learning opportunities.
