Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND)

At Abbey Gates Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child is valued, included and supported to achieve their full potential. In line with our vision of “Learning Together & Making a Difference”, we believe that all children deserve access to a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum within a caring, nurturing and inclusive environment where they feel safe, respected and happy.

Our school ethos is rooted in our values of Care, Compassion, Confidence, Cooperation and Courtesy, alongside our motto “Aim High and Be Kind”. These values underpin everything we do and are central to the way we support pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We recognise and celebrate the individuality of every child and work closely with families, pupils, staff and external agencies to ensure that all children are able to thrive socially, emotionally and academically.

At Abbey Gates Primary School, we are committed to meeting our duties under the SEND Code of Practice (2015) and the Equality Act 2010. We believe that every teacher is a teacher of every child, including those with SEND, and we use a graduated approach to identify and support pupils’ individual needs. Through high-quality teaching, adaptive practice, targeted interventions and personalised support, we strive to remove barriers to learning and participation.

We aim to ensure that pupils with SEND:
• have their needs identified and met as early as possible;
• are fully included in all aspects of school life;
• are encouraged to become confident, independent learners;
• are supported to achieve the best possible outcomes from their individual starting points;
• are listened to and involved in decisions about their education and support;
• develop positive self-esteem, resilience and a sense of belonging within our school community.

We value the importance of strong partnerships with parents and carers and recognise that education works best when schools and families work together. We encourage open communication and collaborative planning to ensure children receive consistent and effective support both in school and at home.

If you would like to discuss your child’s needs or find out more about SEND provision at Abbey Gates Primary School, please contact the school office to arrange an appointment with our SENCo, Mrs Tella Durham.

Together, we aim high, show kindness and ensure every child is supported to flourish.
