Welcome to Foundation 2!

Starting full time education is an incredibly exciting time. We are so pleased that you chose Abbey Gates and look forward to getting to know our new children and families. 

Our Foundation Stage unit is made up of children in F1 (Nursery) and F2 (Reception). We are very lucky to have a large, shared environment that includes 2 indoor and 2 outdoor areas that are open and accessed throughout the day during "challenge time".

In Foundation 2, we learn through a variety of ways; adult directed sessions, child initiated learning and play. We have daily focus sessions for phonics, literacy and maths, explore the outdoors regularly and through our trekking activities, learn about music, art, geography, history, science, RE and much more! Our continuous provision ensures children can access all areas at all times, moving freely between the indoors and outdoors. During ‘challenge time’ staff spend time engaging in quality interactions, observations and small group guided activities such as art, number, mark making and baking.

During Foundation 2, your child will learn to read independently. We begin phase 2 phonics in the autumn term and your child will bring home books to read - it is essential that children practise at home at least 3 times per week. In addition to this, we will share books as a class and encourage you to read to your child regularly. Listening to stories is crucial for communication and language development, broadening your child's vocabulary and preparing them to read and write. Our daily maths sessions will ensure your child has a secure understanding of the basic principles of number, shape, space and measure - in preparation for year 1. 

We are looking forward to the year ahead and the wonderful memories we will all make in Foundation 2. Please check our class page regularly for updates, homework, sticky questions and letters. Tapestry will also be used to communicate and share your child's experiences in school and at home.
