Spelling

Within the Primary Curriculum, children are expected to know and be able to spell this statutory list by the end of Year 4. Of course these are not the only words that children are expected to spell accurately.

Year 4 weekly spellings

In year 4, during this first half term, we are focusing on identifying gaps in spelling knowledge by recapping all of the spellings and spelling patterns that the children were taught in KS1.

Below, you will find the year 1 and 2 Common Exception words that you may want to practise at home each week with your child.

In year 4, competence and fluency in spelling will not be tested weekly, however, we will be assessing to see whether the children can apply their spelling accuracy in their independent writing in lessons.

Year 1 common exception words

Weekly spellings practise/homework

We have now completed all of the spelling rules gap analysis and have identified the specific spelling rules that need recapping. We will focus on one spelling rule per week - we will have 1 spelling session per day to enable the children to practise and embed their learning. To support our approach to spelling in year 4, we will also be sending home a weekly spellings practise/homework sheet - again, this is just another opportunity for your child to practise reading and writing words containing a specific spelling rule to help them become more fluent and accurate in their spelling across the wider curriculum. We will send the weekly spellings practise/homework home every Friday. We would please ask for completed worksheets to be returned to school by the following Thursday.

Thank you in advance for your support smiley

Spelling rules and homework

Here, you will find information about all of the spelling rules that we will cover in year 4.

This has been split into terms so that not only can you go back and recap rules that have already been taught, but you can also see what is coming up if you want to put in a bit of extra practise and get a head start.

You will also see that this is the place to find an electronic copy of the weekly homework just in case your paper copy goes missing or again, you would like to do a spot of revision.
